In my last post, I shared with you all some of my New Year's Decorating resolutions and goals, and in this post I want to share with you all a family project we will be working on this year...a little something we like to call "52 Fun Family Dinners". Our goal is to enjoy a fun sit down family dinner once a week this entire year! We want to document our project on this blog and record our dinners each week.
This project may not sound that revolutionary, but in our modern, fast-paced world, it is actually rather difficult for the entire family to sit down together for a shared meal. I personally think there is so much to be gained by eating together as a family on a regular basis- family bonding, healthy eating, learning valuable things like: table manners, conversation skills, different cultures and foods...not to mention having FUN together as a family!
Each of our fun family dinners will have a theme and incorporate simple table decor, yummy food, and fun table games or activities or discussion topics. For instance, our St Patricks Day Dinner will feature a festive table decked out in green, Shepherd's Pie for our meal, and we will learn about the country and customs of Ireland!
The whole idea started a year ago with Taco Tuesdays...
As a frustrated mother of two picky eaters, I was searching for a meal all four of us would enjoy- (I was tired of fixing a separate meal for my girls). I wanted them to expand their "limited palattes", so I suprised everyone with "Taco Tuesday"...I set the table with a festive striped table cloth and napkins, cooked up some taco meat and shells, set out bowls of beautiful, colorful fresh vegetables and toppings. I played Mexican-style music that night (Gipsy Kings Greatest Hits) and while we ate, we learned about the country of Mexico and even some Spanish phrases. Taco Tuesday was an instant hit at our house and we have been celebrating it ever since!
I learned many things from our Taco Tuesdays:
1. Kids will try new foods, sometimes they just need to be "marketed" and "packaged" in an attractive and fun way!
2. Husbands will come home early from work if dinner is a fun event!
3. Kids are eager to learn new things, like table manners, conversation skills, facts about foreign countries and cultures.
4. Dinnertime doesn't have to be boring!
So I hope you all will join us this year as we attempt our "52 Fun Family Dinners" Project! Each Friday, I will share our most recent dinner here at Starfish Cottage...this Friday, I will be featuring our "New Year's Dinner" from last week, so stay tuned! Also coming up, we will be having "Breakfast Dinner" (in our pj's), a fun 60's Themed "Fondue Dinner", "Souper Bowl Sunday", and "Oscar Night"...
